Following a trip to Peru in the summer of 2006, musician and Barbès club/record label owner Olivier Conan fell in love with the music of Lima’s slums: chicha. An innovative genre created by Peruvian guitarists in the late ’60s, chicha is at once surf music, Colombian cumbia, and ’70s rock—a truly syncretic genre. And considering its foundation of rump-shaking rhythm and ripping electric guitar, it’s easy to understand Conan’s fascination.

This compilation highlights mostly urban artists, where the first Roots of Chicha (Barbès, 2007) focused on Amazonian groups. Bad boy Chacalón and groovy Los Ribereños illustrate the heavy Afro-Cuban influence pervading the album while guitarists Manzanita and Enrique Delgado of Los Destellos display genre-defining (and defying) chops.
